Buy a SL Acess travelcard (1) or a SL coupon strip (2) for riding all SL vehicles (buses and subway/commuter/tram/"retro"* trains) throughout the Stockholm area

First: Rent a bicycle from the city instead of public transportation? (Between april and october.)

What most people and probably you choose for transportation: Buy a SL Acess travelcard for riding unlimited with subway trains (T signs on the street), buses (red or blue), various short-distance ferries, trams, "retro" and commuter trains, no matter if it is in the inner city or far away within the Stockholm area. If the vehicle has "SL" on it, you can go with it. (* The "retro" trains are the trains departing from Slussen/Tekniska högskolan/Ropsten/Alvik to the rich suburb areas of Saltsjöbaden/Danderyd/Lidingö/Bromma.)

SL is the company name that runs the public transporation. Here is the journey planner.

The overview of all tickets and prices is here. Below I write about the two options worth mentioning. It is very advicable deciding for an option, and buying it, as soon as possible after you have got here (see "Where to buy tickets").

1. The different SL Acess travelcards for unlimited riding:
24 hours, 100 kr
72 hours, 200 kr
7 days, 260 kr
30 days, 690 kr

2. A discounted SL strip with single coupons:
Depending on how much you are supposed to use the public transportation during the periods above, it might be better buying the strip, called a "biljettremsa". One strip contains 16 coupons and costs 180 kr. That means that one coupon costs a little more than 11 kr. If you are only riding within the inner-city it will be two coupons per ride every time, no matter if it's just a ride to the next subway station or from Odenplan in the north to Skanstull in the south. If you are going through three zones, for example to the archipelago by bus or by commuter train+bus to Arlanda airport, it will be four coupons. If you are making more than four different subway rides in one day, it pays off buying a travelcard.

Where to buy option number 1 or 2:
Both the travelcards and the strips can be bought at most Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven stores and at the SL store at the lower level of the long-distance train station.

It's best to buy your travel card or your discount strip the first thing you do. (See Getting here and away by airplane on how to save money by buying the travel card already at Arlanda Airport.) It's expensive to buy a single ticket, and you can't buy travelcards at a subway station. On the buses you are not allowed to buy any tickets, for effiency and security reasons, and far from all bus stops has ticket machines (coins/credit cards).

There are also two types of bicycle taxi businesses, one run by some eccentric guy and an other more hip one, but it's not widespread enough. You will have to find them in the street yourself. This is taken during the 2009 Stockholm Marathon.
